Frequently Asked
'Millwork & Moulding' Questions

Common choices for interior millwork include poplar, oak, maple, and pine. Poplar is popular for painted trim because it’s smooth and cost-effective, while oak and maple are ideal when you want a stained, natural wood look with better dent resistance. Pine is a budget-friendly option but is softer and more prone to dings. Your choice should balance appearance, durability, and whether you plan to paint or stain.

The mix of humid summers and dry, cold winters in Central Illinois causes natural wood to expand and contract, so it’s important to choose properly kiln-dried lumber and let it acclimate before installation. Engineered products like MDF or finger-jointed trim can be more stable in these conditions for painted applications. Using appropriate sealers, primers, and finishes also helps protect millwork from seasonal movement and moisture changes. In high-humidity areas like bathrooms, moisture-resistant MDF or treated wood is often a better choice.

MDF (medium-density fiberboard) has a smooth, uniform surface that’s excellent for paint-grade trim and usually costs less than solid wood. Solid wood is stronger at screw and nail points, holds up better to impact, and is preferred when you want a stained finish to show natural grain. MDF can swell if exposed to standing water, so it’s best kept out of very wet areas. For most interior painted trim, MDF is a good value, while solid wood is better for high-traffic areas or stain-grade projects.

Allow millwork to acclimate in the space for at least 48–72 hours before installation to reduce movement after it’s installed. Use construction adhesive along with nails on larger profiles like crown to minimize separation from walls and ceilings. Leave small expansion gaps at long runs and use flexible caulk at joints and corners to hide minor movement over time. Priming all sides of wood, including cut ends, also helps stabilize the material.

PVC and composite exterior trim are highly resistant to rot, insects, and moisture, making them ideal for areas exposed to the elements. They typically require less maintenance than wood and hold paint longer, though they can be more expensive upfront. Traditional wood trim offers a classic look and is easier to customize or repair on-site but must be carefully primed, painted, and maintained to prevent decay. For long-term durability on fascia, soffits, and exterior casings, many homeowners choose PVC or composite over wood.
