Frequently Asked
'Millwork & Moulding' Questions

Common choices for interior trim include poplar, oak, maple, and pine. Poplar is budget-friendly and paints smoothly, while oak and maple are harder, more durable options that take stain well and show attractive grain. Pine is softer and easier to work with but dents more easily, so it’s better in low-traffic areas. Your choice should balance appearance, durability, and whether you plan to paint or stain.

Champaign’s seasonal humidity swings and temperature changes can cause solid wood to expand and contract, which may lead to gaps or warping if materials aren’t chosen carefully. Engineered products like MDF or finger-jointed primed wood can be more stable for painted trim in these conditions. For stain-grade work, well-kiln-dried hardwoods installed with proper acclimation and spacing perform best. Always let materials acclimate indoors for a few days before installation.

MDF (medium-density fiberboard) is smooth, consistent, and great for painted finishes, often at a lower cost than solid wood. However, it’s heavier, more prone to swelling if it gets wet, and not as strong at fastener points as hardwood. Solid wood is more durable, easier to repair, and better for stain-grade applications, but it can show natural imperfections and costs more. The right choice depends on your budget, finish (paint vs. stain), and how much wear the area will see.

Allow all millwork to acclimate in the room for 48–72 hours before installation to reduce movement after it’s installed. Use a quality adhesive along with nails for crown and larger profiles to help keep joints tight over time. Cope inside corners instead of mitering them to minimize visible gaps as materials expand and contract. Finally, prime and seal all cut ends before painting or staining to limit moisture absorption.

For exterior applications, rot-resistant woods like cedar or treated pine, as well as PVC and composite trim boards, hold up better to Champaign’s freeze-thaw cycles and moisture. PVC and composites are highly stable and low-maintenance, making them ideal where long-term durability is a priority. If you choose wood, proper priming, back-priming, and high-quality exterior paint or stain are essential. Regular inspection and touch-up of finishes will significantly extend the life of any exterior millwork.
